I actually completely geeked out on poor Arthur Dorros at a book fair back in the day.  He was quite gracious as I rambled on about how much I loved his sweet Spanglish stories.  And, you can really get lost in the intricate illustrations of Elisa Kleven, which seem to have a million stories of their own hidden in them.  Abuela traces the path of a grandmother and granddaughter as they take flight over New York City, and La Isla takes them a bit further to their beautiful island homeland.
